ATERRA puts a number on its Chilean copper: 159.8 Mt

A maiden resource across four near-surface porphyries — real district scale, but every ounce and pound sits in the lowest-confidence bin.

ATERRA Metals just put its first hard number on the ground in Chile’s Dos Amigos District. The company reported a maiden mineral resource of 159.8 million tonnes at 0.51% copper-equivalent — a blended figure that folds gold into a single copper number using US$4.00/lb copper and US$3,650/oz gold. The resource spans four near-surface porphyries: big, low-grade copper systems typical of the region. Frontera carries the tonnage and the best rock, with one hole (AFROD01) cutting 284 metres at 0.77% copper-equivalent from surface. At Totora, hole ATOD01 returned 194 metres at 0.50% copper-equivalent starting 254 metres down the hole, and a gap-fill hole, ATOD08, added 82 metres at 0.43%. The market had already scented something: the stock roughly doubled to C$0.065 and is up 117% over three months, while copper and the COPX peer index each gained about 14% — meaning nearly all of ATERRA’s move is company-specific, not a copper tide.

The logic here is scale, not richness. A grade of 0.51% copper-equivalent is low-to-moderate, but for a bulk-tonnage porphyry that’s normal — the money is in moving huge volumes of rock. The setting helps: a real Chilean copper district with highway and power nearby, run by a team with two verifiable exits behind it. CEO Carl Hansen co-founded Andina Minerals (sold to Hochschild for about US$104 million) and Atacama Pacific Gold (sold to Rio2 for C$80.5 million), though neither reached mine production. The Totora system itself has been traced for more than 800 metres along surface and to depths of up to 500 metres down-hole, with ATOD08 filling a gap between the main porphyry and a southwest extension.

Now the honest part. Every tonne of this 159.8 Mt sits in the Inferred category — the lowest-confidence class — because drill spacing is wide and irregular and the estimate leans heavily on historical third-party data. The Clinton deposit was never drilled by ATERRA at all. No metallurgical testing has been done, so the 85% recovery assumptions for both copper and gold are unproven. Frontera’s QA/QC could not be verified from original assay certificates; SRK relied on prior Hot Chili reports, with only AFROD01 having ATERRA data. The headline intercepts are down-hole core lengths — true widths are not disclosed. Watch for Phase II drilling at Frontera’s higher-grade core and Totora step-outs, plus a core-review site visit slated for October. Timing on the drilling itself is not stated.
