Barksdale restarts San Javier study, adding gold to the copper for the first time
An updated economic study bolts gold onto a 70.1-million-tonne copper resource in Sonora. The market moved 28% while peers sat still.
Barksdale Resources has kicked off an updated economic study on its San Javier copper-gold project in Sonora, Mexico, and for the first time it is counting the gold. This is not a drill-result release — it is a study restart. The core asset is a 70.1-million-tonne copper resource grading 0.271% total copper (about 289 million pounds of recoverable copper), which outside firm AKF Mining Services will now re-run at current consensus metal prices with pit re-optimization, updated capital costs, and gold folded into the math. The market noticed: BRO.V rose 28.2% over three months while the copper-equity peer index COPX sat flat at -0.3% and copper itself gained only 5.2% — a roughly 28-point spread that reads as a reaction to this specific news, not a sector tide.
The gold is what is new here, and it comes two ways. In 2026 the company re-assayed 187 archived drill-core rejects from five holes drilled in 2007 for gold content. The best gold hole, SJ07-64, returned 9.0 metres at 3.464 grams per tonne — about 31 gram-metres, a measure of grade times thickness. SJ07-66 gave 12.0 metres at 1.084 grams per tonne. A separate pre-existing intercept from 2021, oxide hole SJ21-25, ran 15.0 metres at 0.727 grams per tonne, 21 metres below surface. These are modest numbers, but they sit in a thick, shallow oxide zone roughly 150 metres deep — the kind of outcropping rock a heap leach can treat, with low strip (0.6 tonnes of waste per tonne of ore) and low upfront cost. The team around it carries weight: Chairman George Ogilvie sold Battle North Gold to Evolution Mining at a 45% premium in 2021, and CEO Chris Stewart, appointed in September 2026, ran Barrick’s Hemlo mine.
Now the honest part. The headline 250,000-to-400,000-ounce gold figure is conceptual — the company states plainly it is not a Mineral Resource. It was pulled from grades estimated inside the copper block model, with no geometric evaluation and no cut-off grade stated for the quoted intercepts. Four of five re-assayed holes came back positive, but these are archived rejects, not fresh drilling. Gold recoveries are unknown; bottle-roll and column leach tests — to be conducted on 2007 and 2021 drill core rejects — are not done. No true width is given for any intercept, though the thick oxide zone suggests these shallow hits may approximate true width. The copper-price sensitivity cases come from the 2024 PEA, not a new estimate. The company targets the updated PEA for Q4 2027; gold metallurgical tests remain pending.
