Five of six near-surface holes hit gold at Duquesne West
Emperor's best new hole ran 24.8 m at 7.0 g/t only 85 m down — the shallow rock a starter pit would want — as the stock held a 34.5% gain.
Emperor Metals drilled six holes into the shallow rock at its Duquesne West gold project in Quebec’s Abitibi belt and five of them hit meaningful gold near surface. The standout, DQ26-61, cut 24.8 metres grading 7.0 grams of gold per tonne — thick, high-grade rock, about 174 gram-metres on the width-times-grade shorthand that ranks a hit — and it landed only about 85 metres down. The other four with grade ran 8.4 m at 8.7 g/t, 18.9 m at 4.0 g/t, 8.6 m at 6.1 g/t, and 11.4 m at 2.6 g/t, all between roughly 41 and 100 metres below surface. A sixth hole, DQ26-41, returned 5.7 m at 0.5 g/t — below any economic cut-off. When we last covered Emperor, one deep hole ran 32 metres at 5.9 g/t and the stock ran 83%.
Here is why shallow matters. This property already carries a 1.46-million-ounce inferred resource at 1.69 g/t, and the lowest-strip, near-surface material is exactly what anchors a starter-pit concept. The headline hole being thick and high-grade at only 85 metres is the kind of result that feeds that idea. CEO John Florek is a career geologist with time at Placer Dome, Barrick and Kirkland Lake’s Detour, though the public record shows no mine he has built and sold. Over three months the stock gained 34.5% while gold fell 2.6% and the junior miner index was essentially flat — a company-specific move, not a sector tide, after a sharp mid-period re-rating near 0.61 and a partial giveback to 0.39.
Now the caveats, and most come straight from the release. Per-hole true thickness estimates are provided in the release tables — 55–65% of core length for DQ26-61 and 70–75% to 70–85% for the other holes — so real zone thicknesses are narrower than the core lengths reported. DQ26-57’s 8.7 g/t average leans heavily on a single metre at 59.8 g/t, and DQ26-61 includes single metres at 32.4 and 25.1 g/t — coarse free gold can make such assays erratic, though the company’s screening protocols partly address it. No cut-off grade or compositing method is stated. The release calls these converging lenses with continuity near surface, but with no collar coordinates, azimuths or dips provided, it does not state how far the zone was extended between holes, and that continuity language is interpretive, not demonstrated. The qualified person is a company VP and consultant, not independent. From our last entry, the remaining assays are still only partly in — 11 of 66 holes and about 39% of historical resampling are pending — and drilling did resume as promised. An updated resource and then an economic study are targeted but not dated.
