New porphyry center flagged at Hook — but the assays aren't back yet
Hercules Metals says alteration and a 1.8-km geophysical anomaly point to a fresh copper target in Idaho. The proof drilling waits until 2027.
Hercules Metals told the market on September 14 that it thinks it has found evidence of a new porphyry center — a large body of copper-bearing rock formed around an old magma plume — at a spot it calls the Hook target on its property in western Idaho. The evidence is two things: alteration (rock that’s been chemically cooked and changed by hot fluids, a tell-tale sign of a copper system nearby) and a 1.8-kilometer chargeability anomaly (a patch of ground that holds an electric charge the way metal-rich rock does). One reconnaissance hole, HER-26-03, was drilled to sniff out the edge of it.
Here’s the catch, and the company says it plainly: that hole was drilled about 400 meters west of the anomaly’s core, because no road reaches closer under the current permit. It landed in a distal pyrite halo — the outer fringe of a copper system, where you find iron sulfide but not much copper. Management expects the hole to give “vectoring information” — a compass bearing toward the good stuff — not economic grades. The 500-to-545-meter interval it describes is a core-photo alteration note, not an assayed intercept. So there is no grade and no width to weigh yet. What gives the story its weight is the crew: George Ogilvie arrived as CEO on September 1 with six former Arizona Sonoran Copper executives, the same team that built the Cactus project into a copper resource and sold to Hudbay at a C$2.0 billion implied equity value in June 2026. Barrick Mining is a disclosed strategic shareholder. The stock has doubled in three months — up 101.5% — while copper slipped 1.5% and the copper-equity index COPX fell 5.8%, a re-rating that is purely company-specific, not a commodity wave.
Watch the honest caveats. No assays exist yet; results are pending, and the company itself expects distal, non-significant grades from this hole. The anomaly’s core is undrilled. There is no NI 43-101 resource for any target on the property. The direct test of the Hook core waits on new road-and-pad permitting, targeted to begin in 2027. And a governance note: the TSXV forced cancellation of 18,650,000 options granted to the new team, with another 1,850,000 cancelled voluntarily — the company is still “considering all available means” to replace that pay. Two drills are meanwhile running southern step-outs at the nearby Leviathan discovery.
