Hudbay puts C$30.1M into Pecoy Copper's Peru porphyry

A C$49.8M strategic round, led by an established Peru copper operator, lands on a pre-resource project — and the stock already ran 33%.

Pecoy Copper is raising C$49.8 million in a private placement, and the lead cheque comes from Hudbay Minerals — a company that already runs copper mines in Peru. Hudbay is putting in about C$30.1 million for roughly 9.99% of Pecoy after closing, priced at C$2.02 a share, a 10% premium to the 10-day VWAP as of October 30. A second strategic investor, not named in the release, adds about C$19.7 million for another ~9.99%. The money is earmarked for drilling and work toward a planned updated resource estimate at the Pecoy copper-gold porphyry in southern Peru’s Arequipa region.

Here is why a financing is worth a column. Hudbay is not a passive fund — it is a working copper operator in the same country, and it is taking a board nomination right and an anti-dilution top-up along with its shares. When a knowledgeable industrial partner pays a premium for a stake in an undeveloped porphyry, that is a credibility signal, the kind of due-diligence stamp a generalist can’t easily give. The timing is notable too: Pecoy’s stock rose about 33% over the past three months while the copper-equity index fell roughly 7% and copper itself barely moved. That is a company-specific re-rating, not a sector tide — the market was already leaning in before this announcement. CEO Vincent Metcalfe co-founded Nomad Royalty and sold it to Sandstorm Gold for about C$755 million in 2022, so the deal-making résumé is real.

Now the honest part. This release carries no drill results — no grades, no widths, no assays. There is nothing for a geologist to grade. There is also no current mineral resource estimate; an updated one is only planned, with the September presentation pointing to roughly 12 months out, i.e. Q3–Q4 2027. Historical drilling of fewer than 49,000 metres is cited without grades or tonnage, and phrases like “large porphyry” and “broad mineralized system” are not backed by numbers in this text. The named catalysts are concrete: the placement is expected to close on or about November 5, 2026, and the company says funds will support a roughly 35,000-metre drill program across four rigs. The resource estimate, and a possible economic study behind it, are the longer wait — and the second strategic backer’s identity is still a blank.
