NexMetals nearly triples Selebi North's confident resource

The Botswana copper-nickel rebuild delivered the North number it promised — 8.95 Mt Indicated, grades rising on both metals — as the stock kept falling.

NexMetals Mining put out the second half of a promise. When we last covered the Selebi copper-nickel rebuild, the company had grown its Selebi Main deposit but left the Selebi North estimate unfinished with no date. That North number now exists. The Indicated resource at Selebi North — the higher-confidence category — nearly tripled, from 3.0 to 8.95 million tonnes grading 1.03% copper, 1.08% nickel and 0.06% cobalt, or 412 million pounds copper-equivalent. Inferred tonnage sits at 41.95 million tonnes, carrying 2,255 million pounds copper-equivalent. The estimate carries an effective date of October 16, 2026.

Here is why the jump matters. This is an old Botswana copper-nickel-cobalt mine being rebuilt, and 42,633 metres of new drilling did two things at once: added tonnes and moved roughly 20% of material from Inferred up to Indicated. Grades rose on both copper and nickel. That is real de-risking, not a paper reshuffle. The work carries the right signatures — an independent Qualified Person, J.C. Witley of the MSA Group; assays at an accredited Johannesburg lab (SANAS No. T0387); a 5%/5%/5%/5% QA/QC programme of reference materials, blanks and duplicates; a disclosed cut-off of US$75 per tonne net smelter return; and a stated minimum thickness of 1.5 metres. The release also describes the South Limb flattening and turning toward Selebi Main down-plunge, tracing a corridor roughly 2,000 metres long between 850 and 1,550 metres below surface. None of that market enthusiasm has shown: the stock fell 33% over three months while copper rose 4.3% and the copper-miner index climbed 5.6% — a 37-to-39-point gap that is company-specific, not a sector move.

Now the caveats, and they are load-bearing. That 2,000-metre connection toward Selebi Main is interpretation — drawn from borehole electromagnetics and structural re-logging, not drilled through — so the corridor remains an exploration target, not resource. The Inferred 41.95 million tonnes holds most of the copper-equivalent pounds and, by definition, carries no demonstrated economic viability. The copper-equivalent math leans on metal prices (US$5.10/lb copper, US$9.10/lb nickel, US$20.00/lb cobalt), and nickel recovery is only 55.6%, so deliverable metal trails in-situ grade. One data-quality note: historical assay data from the prior operator was produced at the BCL Phikwe laboratory, which was not independent of the operator and was accredited only for high-grade matte analyses, not exploration-grade samples; NexMetals validated it against new underground holes and excluded historical surface drillholes from the estimate. Watch for the Selebi Main NI 43-101 technical report, due by November 14, and for the Selebi PEA, which the company says is underway with no completion timing stated. The project funding review with National Bank of Canada Capital Markets also continues, with no guaranteed outcome.
