QIMC hits record 30% natural hydrogen at Bennett Hill
A single Nova Scotia hole read 30% hydrogen in circulating drill mud and set off gas alarms — while the stock ran against a falling peer index.
A drill hole in Nova Scotia read 30.0% hydrogen in the mud coming back up the pipe — the highest natural-hydrogen reading Quebec Innovative Materials has reported yet. The hole, DDH-26-05 at the Bennett Hill project, hit that peak at 413 metres down. Nine of twelve sampled depths between 380 and 413 metres read above 20% hydrogen. Free gas came up under enough pressure to trip the rig’s hydrogen alarms — repeatedly. The company that used to be called Québec Silica Resources is now chasing hydrogen and helium, a business it pivoted into in 2024.
Here is why the numbers stand out. Natural hydrogen — hydrogen that seeps up out of rock on its own, no factory needed — is a frontier hunt, and readings this high are genuinely rare. The 20-to-30% band held over roughly 45 metres of hole (368 to 413 metres), so this is vertical persistence, not one lucky spike. Methane read 0.0% and carbon dioxide 0.1% or less, meaning the gas is clean rather than mixed with junk. Pressurized gas reaching surface hints at an open, permeable structure below. The market noticed: QIMC rose nearly 30% over three months while the base-metals peer index fell 9.3% — a roughly 39-percentage-point gap that says the crowd is pricing this specific story, not a sector tide. There’s no tradeable hydrogen benchmark to measure against, so the peer index is the closest yardstick. The company funded the work with a C$17.25M bought deal in April 2026, led by a single underwriter with no named institutional backers.
Now the honest part. These are mud-gas concentrations — what surfaces in the circulating drilling fluid — not lab assays, and the company says so plainly: results ‘are not confirmed by subsequent laboratory analysis.’ A percentage is not a flow rate. The company’s own disclaimer states the alarm events and free-gas observations ‘do not constitute a flow test, formation-pressure test or reservoir test.’ No recoverable volume has been established. This is one hole, with no strike length and no second hole to confirm continuity, so isolation risk is high, and the true thickness of the hydrogen-bearing structure is not stated. Watch for drilling to resume below 416 metres toward a 900-metre target using gear adapted for pressurized gas, and for pressure and flow measurement tools to be deployed — the measurements that would establish whether a flow rate and reservoir deliverability exist. Timing on both is not stated.
