AngloGold nearly doubles its Thesis stake in C$58.5M raise
A major gold producer topped up to 9.7% while Thesis banked cash for a 20,000-metre drill campaign in BC's Toodoggone district.
Thesis Gold & Silver closed a C$58.5M financing on August 27, 2026, and the headline is who showed up. AngloGold Ashanti — a major gold producer — nearly doubled its stake, from about 5% to 9.7%. The raise breaks into 8,342,257 hard-dollar shares at C$3.4118, plus C$30M in charity flow-through shares priced at C$4.95 and C$4.67. No warrants were disclosed. The money funds work at the Lawyers-Ranch project in British Columbia’s Toodoggone district, where the company has built a 4.7-million-ounce gold-equivalent resource and completed a Pre-Feasibility Study in December 2025.
A major producer topping up its position is a notable event in a junior financing — AngloGold is the sole named strategic investor, and Centerra Gold joined an earlier C$38.7M round in February 2026. Worth knowing how the cash actually works: flow-through shares transfer tax deductions to buyers rather than dropping proceeds straight into the treasury, so the effective hard-dollar cash to the company is roughly C$28.46M of the C$58.5M headline. The flow-through C$30M is legally earmarked — it must be spent on Canadian exploration, which points to an active drill season. CEO Ewan Webster (PhD, P.Geo.) has run the project since 2018 and was elevated to CEO in August 2023, though the public record shows no prior mine build or exit, and his direct ownership sits at 0.21%. Management’s average tenure is under one year.
A fair word on what this is not: this is a financing release, not a drill result. There are no intercepts, grades, or widths here to grade, so nothing to place against peers on the numbers. What the company has flagged next is a roughly 20,000-metre program at Lawyers-Ranch — 12,000 metres of exploration plus 8,000 metres supporting a Feasibility Study — with 2026 results expected from Ranch and Ranch East, timing not stated. The flow-through spending must be incurred by December 31, 2027 and renounced to subscribers by the end of 2026. The Feasibility Study is targeted before the end of 2027. Two name changes — Benchmark Metals to Thesis Gold to Thesis Gold & Silver — and 16 years without production are part of the file. Readers can weigh a major’s growing stake against a leadership bench that is largely new.
