Volta drills 275 m below its Springer pit — and grade grows going down

Two holes at the Ontario rare-earth project stayed mineralized over their full ~400-metre lengths, and the stock is up 72% while the sector fell.

On September 3, 2026, Volta Metals said drilling at its Springer rare-earth and gallium project near Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, extended the mineralized system 275 metres below the pit shape its model had drawn. Hole SL26-37 stayed mineralized over its full 414 metres of assayed core at 0.41% TREO (total rare earth oxides — the combined weight of the rare-earth metals in the rock). A second hole, SL26-39, did much the same: 417.5 metres running 0.42% TREO. The press release led with a 5.00% TREO number, but that came from a single 0.65-metre sliver of carbonatite vein.

Here is where the gram-meter math matters (grade times thickness, the number that tells you how much metal a hole actually carries). The headline vein scores about 3 %-metres — near noise. The full-hole intercepts score roughly 170 and 175 %-metres. That is the real story: not a rich streak, but a big, consistent body of modest-grade rock. And the grade firms up with depth — the bottom 105.65 metres of SL26-37 ran 0.63%, and a tail near the very bottom hit 1.46% over 8.75 metres, still open. About a quarter of the rare earths are the magnet metals that command the best prices, with a gallium credit on top. This is a bulk-tonnage system, not a bonanza. Usenmez, the geological engineer who took Metallum’s Superior Lake zinc project to feasibility, is running the same playbook here: prove scale, then prove economics. The market has taken notice — the stock rose 72% over three months while the rare-earth benchmark fell 22%, a roughly 94-point gap that rules out any sector tailwind.

Now the honest part. Volta reported downhole core lengths only — no true widths, so the real thickness of the zone may be less than the numbers suggest. No cut-off grade or compositing interval was given, and no qualified person was named. QA/QC disclosure is limited: the Saskatchewan Research Council is named as the assay laboratory, but no blank, standard, or duplicate insertion rates, and no assay method details, appear in the release. Six of the thirteen holes remain unassayed, so consistency across the full program isn’t yet demonstrable. Whether 0.4% TREO is economic hinges on the pending resource update, targeted for late 2026, alongside an initial gallium estimate. A PEA was flagged for year-end 2026 in an earlier filing but not repeated here. The remaining assays come as the SRC delivers them.
