Viridian puts a first number on Kraken — a conceptual one

An early-stage target pegs Kraken at 41–61 Mt of low-grade copper-nickel-cobalt, and the stock has risen 52 percent while copper stayed flat.

Viridian Metals put its first number on the Kraken copper-nickel-cobalt project in Labrador on September 15. The number is a conceptual one: an Exploration Target of 41 to 61 million tonnes at 0.35 to 0.52 percent copper-equivalent — an order-of-magnitude sketch, not a resource, and the ±20 percent range is just a parameter sensitivity, not a measure of confidence. When we last covered Viridian, it was raising up to C$1.0 million with assays still pending. Those assays have started to land. The prior entry promised first 2026 results in coming weeks and more through November; this release delivers early holes and the target built from them, and the November batch remains still pending.

Here is the mechanism. Copper-equivalent bundles three metals into one grade, and at Kraken copper alone is only about 0.09 to 0.13 percent — the headline leans hard on nickel and cobalt, marked up 1.88 and 3.75 times. What is genuinely interesting sits outside the target. Hole VKS26-054 hit 3.3 metres at 1.68 percent copper-equivalent from surface (0.7 to 4.0 metres down), driven mostly by nickel, plus 6.2 metres at 1.57 percent between 20.7 and 26.9 metres — near-surface intervals the target explicitly excludes. Four of more than 60 conductors — buried bodies that carry electric current — have been drilled, and all four came back mineralized. That is a systems-scale hint. The stock has behaved accordingly: VRDN.CN rose 52 percent over three months while copper was essentially flat and the copper-equity index slid about 5 percent. This is company-specific, not a sector tide. CEO Tyrell Sutherland, a registered geologist, holds an exploration credit on Auteco’s Pickle Crow with no completed exit on record.

Now the honest part. The true thickness of the VKS26-054 intervals is not yet known — the target uses a modelled 8.6-metre average, not real widths. No metallurgical test work has been done, so the 80 percent recovery assumed for all three metals is exactly that, an assumption — and the company plans to begin metallurgy late in the fourth quarter. Only four of 60-plus conductors are drilled, so the broader-system story stays conceptual. And the company has a paid retail-marketing agreement running, worth watching as you read the framing. More 2026 assays come as received; the company says an updated target will follow, with timing not stated.
